Ups And Downs
It can be quite difficult to come up with new content ideas, record yourself, and hit every frame, facial expression, and tone of voice how you envisioned it. I have an older YouTube page where I used to post videos all the time but they were all basically unedited, and I would just speak from the heart about topics that were meaningful and important to me. I had no script. It was fun and simple. You can check out some of these older videos here: theLughXPerience - YouTube.
Posting With Purpose
Posting with a purpose is something that I have been struggling with. I did not get too involved with social media because I felt like it “took away from the art” but I don’t believe that’s the case anymore. In fact, I think being active on social media can actually enhance your image as an artist, your musical reach, and helps you to not only find new fans, but build connections with fellow artists and other people throughout the world in ways that were not possible when big labels were running things. It keeps you accountable, but it has been very challenging to keep creating and producing fresh, new content.
On top of this, spending hours and hours going through all of the videos just so you can edit them into a well-developed and interactive story is something that is completely unfamiliar to me. I’ve done my best to be very selective with my social media feeds, especially on Instagram (God Bless the Algorithm). Its been quite the journey to try and curate them to help continue to provide me original and new musical content. I’ve started using it as a source of inspiration for my own content and I have found that it is filled with great information on how to grow and develop as an independent musician.
I’ve spent so many hours recording videos, producing music, and editing content that it’s been starting to feel like a part-time job. Thankfully, this has worked to my advantage because I have been able to create a solid weekly schedule in order to mitigate the feelings of burnout and stay consistent. This allows me follow daily routines and rituals each and every week to keep me productive, inspired, and going without much thought of what’s next.
Conclusion
There has been several ups and downs just in the first 6 months of my music journey, and I continue to expect to experience a whole lot more. Life is like a wide valley. Sometimes you feel like you’re walking for miles in the shadow of darkness, with absolutely nothin’ hittin’ or happenin’, then on top of that you gotta climb up the rolling hills; however, eventually you DO get to the top and find out that you really love the view.
This shii has not gone on how I expected it to. By now I had planned on having my Only Child EP out, and all of the singles dropped, or at least going into my third one this month. Turns out, I have not even got one out and am still working on finishing up all the details of the first one.
But I have been able to adapt and overcome, and I am very pleased with where I am right now, I’ve just dropped my a new single, and I absolutely love it - brand new content, brand new music, so many new opportunities follow close at hand.
Stream it on SoundCloud now, and it recently got approved for Spotify.
